Faya Project

Environmental regeneration, slope resilience to climate action

It began in December 2019. Two public entities have joined the project, helping to define plants and species.

By the end of 2024, approximately 85,000 plants (endemic or of value to pollinators) +5,000 trees had been planted.

Energy efficiency and decarbonization.

Public Lighting and Electrification Vehicles 24-hour surveillance

Public lighting

In April 2024 the public lighting upgrade was completed. A total of 2,853 luminaires were changed to LED, taking into account criteria for the protection of migratory birds (shearwaters – due to a reduction in stranding), LIFE-IP Macaronesian Islands Project.

Surveillance vehicles

The 24-hour roadside surveillance service travels great distances to guarantee user services. Since August 2023, this service has operated with 100% electric vehicles, considerably reducing the consumption of fossil fuels.

Both initiatives prevent 700 tons of CO2eq from being emitted into the Azorean sea each year. This annual figure is equivalent to no longer driving 5.83 million kilometers, enough to circle the Earth 145 times.
